    Evaporation

    hhowiejr

      Greetings,

I found when I have some empty spots in the tower, even with the rock wool inserted into the basket, there is a lot of evaporation; resulting in 1/3 of the reservoir evaporating in a single week.  I found by wrapping the rock wool in Saran-wrap and then inserting the rock wool into the basket, I reduce the evaporation of water by at least 2/3.

I've used joed invention!  It is actually just a cone collar you can find on Amazon and a flex straw. I wouldn't waste my rock wool.  This also provides maximum coverage of the port, preventing light from getting into your TG.

Hi hhowiejr, Here is the detail associated with ronllewellyn post above: Re: Do empty slots need covers?

It is important to keep in mind that you need to let some air inside the TG to keep the nutrient solution oxygenated.

The rock wool wrapped in Saran-wrap does not block out all the air.  To block out all the air would require something more sophisticated than the rock wool wrapped in Saran-wrap.  You can see the condition on the Saran-wrap, which tells me there is air flow around the wrapped rock wool.

                Hi Howard,

Because I can't seem to get enough ports, I am just curious...

Why do you have empty ports?

In fact, why is anyone leaving empty ports?

dperrone, Yes everyone's goal should be to have all ports full of plants but empty ports happens all the time both at startup and throughout the growing season.  I'll use myself as an example.  I started 2 Towers with seedlings I ordered but I always fill in the blanks with seedlings from a local nursery or Lowe's.  Seedlings arrived on Thursday and I had them all in by Saturday however I got too busy that weekend to go to the local nursery or Lowe's so I filled the open ports with the cloning collars.  Throughout the growing season we try to replace plants that have gone to seed, matured to their fullest, consumed their port, etc. with seedlings we've either started from seed or ordered.  Timing isn't always perfect so cloning collars are used when there is a gap.
