    water stopped going to top

    stuwer

      I don't know what has happened .

I was preoccupied trying to install my tomato cage (late, after growing a month). Now , i see that he water does not go to the top any more.

The motor (ie the pump) works.I tried to clean out plant growth inside the tub, but it still stopped going to the top.

      All my plants are wilting.

      Any ideas appreciated

Hi stuwer, The following checklist may be of some value:

          • Ensure the TG nutrient tub is at least 1/2 full of nutrient solution.
          • Make sure the submersible pump is attached to the bottom of the nutrient tub.
          • Check the pump pre-filter to ensure it is clean.
          • Check the pump internals (impeller) to ensure that it is free of debris. You will need to carefully disassemble the pump - follow the directions that came with the model pump you received.
          • Check the pump flow rate dial - it should be set to the MAX setting (note:not all model pumps supplied with the TG have a flow rate dial).
          • Check the "blue hose" connections between the pump and underside of the TG base are snug.
          • Check that all tower sections are firmly seated against each other and that there are no visible gaps between the sections.
          • Check for leaks in the center riser pipe that is formed by stacking the tower sections together. One method to accomplish this is to remove a black net pot in each section (one at a time) and using a flashlight, look in through the open tower section growing port while the pump is on.

In the meantime, get a small cup, scoop some nutrient solution out of the tub, and pour it in the top shower cap... repeat several times. This manual process will buy you a little time to work out the issue with the pump.

I’ve done some cleaning , and I think I’ve turned the pump now, to full strength. There doesn’t seem to be any holes.

I  actually ,if I squeeze the assembly , can get a floto the top.

9It maybe that because I had a large plant growth when I started to put up my cage, some of the pieces were pushed apart, though I don’t see that.

I notice that the two rods which go close to the top of the assembly stick out a great deal, and I can’t put the wing nuts on to fix them tight in place.

              Could that be the problem^

In fact , now that I think about it, in my previous question dealing with problems putting up the cage, you mentioned that the cage rods area different size than the assembly rods. Might it be possible that I’ve mixed them up, and so I can’t close the assembly tight^

Hi stuwer, Sounds like you are using the wrong rods inside the TG... which is causing separation of the tower sections... which is causing leakage of the center nutrient feed pipe... which is preventing nutrients from making it all the way up to the top shower cap.

                      How do I check^

                      What is the correct size,^

Stuwer, it is my opinion the pumps that come with the Towers are of a highly inferior quality.  I had three of the four pumps fail (would not pump water to the top of the tower) and the fourth is barely getting the water to the top of the Tower.  I have cleaned the pumps, but the pumps still will not pump the water to the top of the tower.  I have had these pumps less than one year - terrible quality!!!  I went out and purchased quality pumps from Home Depot.  They have a 16 foot cord, which allows for a LOT more movement of the Towers, especially when you have three towers.  Just my thoughts.  Howard

Actually , this season I ordered a new pump , because the old failed. It seems to be much better quality, but maybe I stillcan’t control the strength.

                            I’m not sure.

Hi hhowiejr, I respectfully disagree. I have used every single model pump supplied with the TG for many years now and found their lifespan to be of an acceptable / average / typical duration for this type of electro-mechanical device. Then again, I am meticulous when it comes to maintaining my equipment on a regular basis. This include completely breaking-down the submersible nutrient solution pump to clean the impeller and impeller cavity (as stated in the manufacturer's instructions that come with the pumps).

In supporting countless hundreds of TG users over the years, I can trace just about 99% of reported cases of pump failure back to improper and/or inadequate maintenance.
